A night on an Alleppey houseboat is, for many people, the memory of their entire Kerala trip. But "houseboat" covers everything from simple one-room kettuvallam to floating luxury suites. Here's how to choose well.
1. Decide how many bedrooms you need
Houseboats come with one to five bedrooms. A couple wants a one-bedroom for privacy; a family of six is happiest in a two- or three-bedroom boat with a shared living deck.
- 1 bedroom: romantic, intimate, ideal for honeymooners
- 2–3 bedrooms: families and small friend groups
- 4–5 bedrooms: large families and celebrations
2. Standard, deluxe or premium?
The category mostly affects the cabins and food.
- Standard: clean, comfortable, fan or basic AC at night
- Deluxe: better interiors, AC through the evening, upgraded menu
- Premium / luxury: en-suite cabins, full AC, sun-decks and a dedicated chef
Our tip: even on a budget, pay the small jump to deluxe for night-long AC — the backwaters are humid.
3. Understand the cruising window
Most houseboats cruise from around noon to the evening, moor overnight (boating is restricted after dark for safety), then cruise again in the morning. So your "overnight cruise" is really a glorious afternoon, a moored sunset and a misty sunrise. That's exactly as it should be.
4. Ask about the food
The onboard chef is half the magic. Expect a Kerala spread — karimeen (pearl spot fish), prawns, appam, and vegetarian feasts that surprise everyone. Always flag dietary needs in advance; good operators happily adapt.
5. Private vs shared
We almost always recommend a private houseboat — it's your crew, your schedule and your sun-deck. Shared boats exist for budget travellers but lose much of the romance.
