Kerala is a year-round destination, but the "best" time depends entirely on what you want from your trip. Here's how the year actually feels on the ground, so you can plan around the weather instead of being surprised by it.
The short answer
For most travellers — honeymooners, families and first-timers — the sweet spot is September to March. The monsoon has washed everything impossibly green, the backwaters are full, and the weather is warm without being punishing.
If you only remember one thing: October to February is comfortable, dry and gorgeous. Everything else is a trade-off you can plan around.
Peak season: October to February
This is Kerala at its most welcoming. Days are warm (28–32°C), evenings are pleasant, and humidity is manageable. The backwaters are brimming, Munnar's tea hills are lush, and every festival from Onam's tail to Christmas lights up the towns.

- Watch for: higher prices and busy houseboats around Christmas–New Year. Book early.
Shoulder season: March to May
Summer brings heat to the plains and coast, but the hill stations stay blissfully cool. Munnar and Wayanad are at their best, and you'll find quieter trails and better rates.

- Watch for: humid, hot days in Kochi and Alleppey by midday
The monsoon: June to September
Don't write it off. The southwest monsoon is when Kerala turns into the emerald postcard you've seen — waterfalls thunder, the air smells of wet earth, and the famous Ayurveda season begins (cool, humid weather is considered ideal for therapies).
- Best for: Ayurveda retreats, photography, dramatic green landscapes, low prices
- Watch for: heavy rain can interrupt boating and treks; pack accordingly

- Jan–Feb: Cool, dry, perfect. Peak season.
- Mar–May: Hot on the coast, lovely in the hills.
- Jun–Aug: Monsoon. Green, cheap, atmospheric.
- Sep: Onam festival, rains easing — a hidden gem.
- Oct–Dec: The classic window. Book houseboats ahead.
Planning around the festivals
If you can, time your trip with Onam (Aug–Sep) for Kerala's grandest cultural celebration, or the Thrissur Pooram (Apr–May) for elephants, parasols and percussion at full volume.
